Who is musically speaking SuRie?

Hi! I’m SuRie, a singer-songwriter from the UK. I trained classically in piano, oboe and voice, before moving into more contemporary styles such as jazz, theatre and pop and now Eurovision!

If you could define yourself with three emotions, what would they be?

Friendly, loving, happy

We can notice that the music runs through your veins, you write from an early age, you graduated from the Royal Academic of Music and also teach in Mountview academy of theater arts, but we want to know by your own words what does music mean in your life?

Music is everything to me! I live, sleep, eat, breathe it! It’s all I’ve ever done in life and all I will continue to do. It is truly the one universal language and that is what is so beautiful about the Eurovision Song Contest also as it really does unite so many of us for one precious night of the year, celebrating and supporting each other’s differences, our music and culture and focusing on positivism and joy!

We have read that you participated as a backup singer for artist such as Chris Martin of Coldplay. How has this experience been for you?

I supported Chris Martin for only one night, which was, of course, a fantastic experience, but we weren’t on tour together or anything like that.

In the Eurovision world you are known for have been also a backup singer for Loïc (2015) and Blanche (2017). How was it like working with them and what do you remember about your time at Eurovision?

I have the fondest memories of working with Loïc and Blanche – both very different, beautiful Belgian artists, with incredible voices! I have huge respect for both of them and we had wonderful times at Eurovision together that I will always remember sweetly.

“From behind to the front” How the idea to participate in Eurovision: You Decide became to your mind?

After working with Blanche I was invited to participate in the song writing camps for the UK and across Europe, to write songs that might be considered options for various countries for Eurovision. Then I was approached by the UK to try some of their top songs for their TV show and I liked Storm the best!

You conquered with your presentation to the jury and the tele voting. What did you feel when you were named as the representative of the United Kingdom?

Thank you! It was a crazy moment, quite surreal and I don’t totally remember exactly what happened in those immediate moments!! But the love in the room from the amazing audience was overwhelming and it was a really special night. I’m so proud to be representing the UK.

What is the message that do you want to tell us with “Storm”?

A hopeful message that Storms, our problems, don’t last forever. We all face storms every day – personal, national, global problems – but, if we can unite, we can get through those problems together.

Will the song have some changes? What could you tell us about your staging?

We’ve worked hard to fine tune some of the details of the track, adding a live string quartet, adding lots of atmospheric production elements that weren’t originally there, getting it mixed by the incredible Matt Lawrence who won a Grammy for his work with Mumford and Sons and more. It’s been a really busy, brilliant month! Now we move onto discussing the staging … !

Eurovision is a festival lived with great passion by “Latinos” around the continent. did you know this? What do you think about the scope of the festival to our continent?

It’s fantastic that Eurovision attracts such a huge audience of viewers from all over the world. It’s so precious that we can all unite in our love of music for one special night and celebrate all the good things in life!

Do you know any Latin country? Would you like to bring your music to our countries? “It would be exciting for many of us”

I would love to bring my music to Latin countries! It’s always been a dream of mine to visit many Latin countries and enjoy the beautiful music and culture you have to offer. A very dear friend of mine is Brazilian and has promised we shall visit Brazil together soon, but perhaps you can recommend me other places I should visit too?

Finally, a message to our readers…

Thank you so much for your support, kind messages of love and for listening to my song Storm! I hope you continue to enjoy the SuRie story as we get closer to the Eurovision grand final and I can’t wait to sing for you all on May 12th!
