Who are musically speaking The Humans? Tell us about your origins, musical genre, influences, etc
The Humans is really a group of friends who have accumulated many years of experience playing various genres alongside Romania’s biggest artists, ranging from Pop and Dance to Rock and Alternative. Most of us have played together before in various bands and TV shows formulas.
If you could be defined with three emotions, what would they be?
Joy, excitement and love for what we do.
How did you meet and how was the way to decide to become into a band?
Four of us (Cristina Caramarcu, Alex Matei, Adi Tetrade and Alin Neagoe) were already playing together for a few years in a different formula. Little over a year ago, we decided to pursue this new musical project, co-opting Alex Cismaru on guitar and Adrian Tănase as the second Lead Vocal.
For the Eurovision Song Contest we asked our lovely friend Corina Matei to play the cello alongside us, but that unfortunately meant leaving Adrian Tănase behind, as the contest’s rules does not allow more than 6 people on stage.
How was idea to participate in the Selectia Nationala born?
As part of a previous band, some of us participated in the National Selection two years ago. It was an amazing experience and we wanted to do it again and this time to make it big. And, as you can see, we did! It was a great idea.
How did you live the selection process to enter the Romania pre- selection? Was it stressed, or a relax time, just waiting if would going to happen or not?
Although we had a great time and met a lot of wonderful and professional people along the way, you can never take anything for granted. So yes, it was stressful at times, but we truly believed in what we had to say and I think that’s very important. The public, not only our fans, picked up on that and voted for us, which meant the world.
Your song was well received from the beginning and you became favorite. Did this give additional pressure to the competition?
Yes and no. The pressure was there all along because we had really great competitors and you can never know for sure until the end. But having a great reaction from the jury right from the start and becoming a favorite of the public did give us a boost of confidence. We very much respect our public and we were truly impressed with the feedback we got.
“Goodbye” is the name of your proposal for Eurovision. What are you saying “goodbye” to?
All the worries. All the dark thoughts. Every negative thing surrounding us. “Goodbye” is a homage to those who refuse to give up and who keep searching for the good side in everything. We live in a world where it’s easy to get lost in dark thoughts, so we want to encourage people to keep trying to find a bright silver lining in every little aspect of their lives.
What expectations do you have with your participation in Eurovision?
We want to win, of course. But we also try to embrace everything about what might as well be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We have support from the great crew of the TVR (the Romanian National Television) and we believe we will polish our performance into an amazing and complete show.
How this experience will help with you career?
Every part of this experience is an opportunity to learn new things and meet great people. And of course, playing our song in front of millions of people can’t hurt, right?
What do you think you will contribute to the festival?
We bring to Lisbon a song with a strong message, as well as an amazing mix of energy and emotions on stage.
Have you thought about possible changes for the song? What can we know about your staging?
Yes, we have discussed various changes, but to be honest, we like it the way it is. The song got us this far as it is. It has a sincere message, coming from deep in our hearts so we want to preserve it. As for the stage, we’re really keen on keeping it a surprise for as long as possible.
Eurovision is a festival followed by hundreds of Euro-fans in the countries of Latin America. Did you know this?
Not until now. When you say Eurovision, you think of Europe. But come to think of it, the world is becoming smaller and smaller, so it’s only natural that more and more people are watching it worldwide. Besides, the music and the stories that Eurovision is bringing forward are great, so they appeal to people all over the world. We take the opportunity to say hi! to all the Euro-fans in Latin America, we hope that they will enjoy a great show in Lisbon 2018!
Do you have any latin musical references? What do you know about our continent?
We love Luis Miguel and his amazing live performances, for example. No wonder he won so many Grammys. About your continent we know that we’d love to come and visit and meet all the wonderful people.
Would you like to visit our countries later? Maybe say “goodbye” to Europe for a while”
Yes, definitely. We love adventure and challenges, that is why we entered the Eurovision contest. We love to meet people and to take our positive, upbeat musical message to them. So see you soon!
